2020 - Trip Reports - Mahogany Flats Death Valley Area July

Trip Notes:

Mahogany Flats

Death Valley Area July 2020

Sunny & Jean Hansen

Tuesday, July 21, 2020: Left home at 12:15 p.m., got gas & ice and left for Death Valley National Park. We drove out through Trona and then up Wildrose. We got to camp at Mahogany Flat at 4:00 p.m. At that time the temperature was 83 degrees – really nice! It is a beautiful campground and later, we had a great happy hour looking out over Death Valley.

Wednesday, July 22, 2020:  We left camp at 8:00 a.m. and hiked in the opposite direction of Telescope Peak (which we have hiked twice before – always in July). Along the way, we revisited several sites we had seen before, including house rings and petroglyphs. We hiked out along a rocky slope on an old trail and then down into a sheltered area where there were some petroglyphs – not bad ones, either. Then we re-traced our steps back toward camp, taking a slightly different route and on the way back, we found a new (to us) petroglyph site. Again, not spectacular, but nice to find. When we got back to the car, we left Mahogany Flat and drove back out through Emigrant Canyon, Stovepipe Wells, Furnace Creek, Shoshone and finally on home on the I-15. We arrived home at 6:15 p.m. It’s always fun to visit Death Valley.   ~ Sunny and Jean
