White Mountains and Bristlecone Pines

Leader: Jay Lawrence

This year we are adding some new territory to a trip that has become an old favorite. Mignon Slentz suggested adding a side trip to Sylvania ghost town and huge mill site and camping at Cottonwood Creek, which is on 168, about ten miles from Dyer and gas (about a one hour drive from Big Pine). Sylvania is close by off the Lida Road / Palmetta ruins. A short cut goes from Cottonwood Creek to back entrance of Sylvania. This sounds like an excellent way to freshen things up and see some new sights. Expect HOT daytime temps 90-100° in the low altitudes (4,000 feet) and coolish 40-50° nights in the high altitudes (8,000-11,000 feet). Email Jay for additional info. San Bernardino Mountains

Leader: Danny & Norma Siler

Come and enjoy a beautiful day on dirt roads exploring the San Bernardino Mountains in the Big Bear area. Bring your families, kids and grandkids.

We will be exploring specifically in the area north of Big Bear Lake including some sites in Holcomb Valley. We expect to have 10 -12 stops to visit.

A high clearance vehicle is a necessity for this trip, but four-wheel drive is not required. Our main interest is an enjoyable day driving backcountry in the forest.

Bring your GMRS Radio - we will pick a channel that morning. And don’t forget lunch, chair, snacks, and drinks. We must limit our group to 8 vehicles. If you can have a person ride with you, please let us know. If you would like to ride with someone, please let us know.

Bring any maps you have: AAA, BLM, DeLorme, USFS, USGS, etc. If you have the Bill Mann book then bring it too.

A Forest Service Adventure Pass is required. Also qualifying is America the Beautiful Interagency Pass or a National Parks pass. At the picnic area during our pre-run the Forest Service was issuing citations for vehicles not displaying the pass. The fine is $5.00 with a mail-in envelope.

We will meet 10:00 a.m. near Fawnskin. Specific instructions to the meeting place will be provided. Please sign-up at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or (714) 878-1259. We will have this cell phone with us during our trip but cell service is usually non-existent in the backcountry.

Baja California Loop

The North Half

Leader: Jay Lawrence

We will be doing border-to-border loop, covering about 1,100 miles over nine days. To cover that much territory and have some time to stop and smell the roses, there will be days with a lot of driving, some legs as short as 90 miles, but several in the 200 mile range.

September weather should favor us, with Pacific Coast temps in the 70s and Sea of Cortez coast temps in the high 80s. There will be primitive backcountry and beach camping, pictos, historic places, a ghost town, and of course, some beautiful spots and good food. About two thirds pavement and one third back roads. We will mix camping in the outback with a few stops in civilization for food and gas and a motel overnight or two to let folks get a hot shower and a good rest. Required: 4 wheel drive, high clearance vehicle, MEXICAN auto insurance, pesos, FMM tourist visa, full size spare.Vehicles will all need to be well maintained and carry appropriate spare parts and recovery gear. Drivers will need to bring a relaxed demeanor, good will, and a keen eye for road hazards and unskilled local driver shenanigans. Meetup details, itinerary and other trip info will be emailed to trip participants. Contact Jay if you have any pressing questions: This email address is being protected from spambots.
